ATU 1177 President, Amanda Malone; Vice President, Vanessa Wadsworth and Shop Steward, Michael Gilliam represented the local at the Annual Salute to Labor Unions & Community Leaders Breakfast, hosted by Hampton’s Virginia Democratic Committee. There they met several local candidates who were endorsed by Virginia AFL-CIO.

We have to overcome voter apathy and Flip Virginia Blue. Virginia AFL-CIO President, Doris Crouse-Mays said,  "This is is the most important election ever."

Back in Norfolk, bus and light rail operators and mechanics wore their union T-shirts on Labor Day to remind the public that it is the ATU Local 1177 who drive the buses; and labor unions that drive the economy.

When people see all of the drivers standing united, in matching union T-shirts, they will see that workers are the majority, in any company--as long as they are organized and fighting for a common cause.

Drivers and mechanics at Hampton Roads Transit have been forced to work 6 days a week for the past 2 years, due to a shortage of drivers and mechanics, and it’s getting worse. Mandatory Overtime is assigned in reverse-seniority order, that means the most junior drivers are called first. But it’s so bad in Hampton that EVERY driver must work on their day off--even those with over 20 years' seniority.

Although ATU 1177 is collaborating with HRT to come up with creative ways to attract new employees, real relief will not occur until the Union can stand together and negotiate the harsh Mandatory Overtime policy out of their contract.
