The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1177 represents 500 transit workers: bus drivers, light rail operators, and mechanics (diesel and electro).  They deliver service to 22 million passengers throughout Hampton Roads, Virginia.
It was chartered in 1938, as Street, Electric Railway and Motor Coach Employees of America Local 1177. It continued representing workers in 1944 when Norfolk switched to rubber-wheeled buses, through 1999 when Tidewater Regional Transit (TRT) and Peninsula Transit (PENTRAN) merged to create Hampton Roads Transit.  We remain the voice of HRT workers today.

Local 1177 is a member of the International Amalgamated Transit Union, the largest transit labor organization representing transportation workers in United States and Canada. With more than 198,000 members in 253 local unions spread across 47 states and nine provinces, including 3,000 workers at Greyhound Lines, Inc.  ATU members work as bus drivers, light rail operators, maintenance and clerical personnel and other transit and municipal employees. ATU is affiliated with the state and national AFL-CIO.
