
Solon K. Willoughby
1954 - 1958
Solon was born in Bertie County, N. C. on October 5, 1905. He received his education in the schools of Bertie County. He was married to Gladys Bryant, Rich Square, N. C. on July 19, 1927.
Mr. Willoughby's father died when he was eleven years of age and he was the oldest of six children. After his father's death his mother purchased a small farm in Ahoskie, N. C. and he went to work on the farm and raised the other five children. At the age of twenty-one Solon secured a job in a department store and worked for one year and then went into the service station business which he stayed in for two years. In January 1928 he secured a job in the Ford Plant, Norfolk, Virginia and worked there until November 1932 at which time he went to work with the Virginia Electric and Power Company. He operated a bus for eleven years and was promoted to cashier in 1942. After serving a year as cashier he decided that he would like to be a mechanic and was transferred to the mechanical department on September 17, 1943.
He is the proud father of two children, Margaret Diane, age 19, a sophomore at Blue Mountain College in Mississippi; and Kenneth Bryant, age 26 months. He is a member of the Norview Baptist Church of which he is chairman of the Deacon Board and Superintendent of the Junior Department. He is also very active in the various other church activities. Belongs to Atlantic No. 2 Lodge A. F. & A. M. and John Walter Royal Arch Chapter of Masonic Order.
Mr. Willoughby is also on the Advisory Committee of the Norfolk Transit Federal Credit Union, Chairman of Executive Board of Division 1177, Member of Tri-City Council. Delegate to Norfolk Central Labor Union and a delegate to the Virginia State Legislative Conference Board of the Motor Coach Operators.
Most of his leisure time is spent visiting the sick and helping those in need. He has the respect of all of those who come into contact with him and is loved by his fellow employees. He resides at 117 Warwick Circle and owns his home.
