When the Nazis occupied Austria they forced all workers to join the German Labor Front, in making equipment for German soldiers. However the disbanded Trade Unionists secretly organized underground unions. When Germany surrendered in 1945 the Austrian trade unionist grew to 1.230 million members. !n 1947 the ranks grew to 1.4 million, made up of 80% Social Democrats, 10% Christian Democrats, and 10% Communists.
