NEW! KNOW YOUR RIGHTS Department of Labor's brief on Family Medical Leave Act FMLA
HRT's Para-transit division joins ATU Local 1177
In August 2022, 129 of HRT's paratransit workers voted to join our local. Their current paratransit subcontractor, VIA, is worried because this is the first time a for-profit Micro Transit company has successfully voted to unionize.

Our Local and the paratransit employees are just waiting for VIA to exhaust their appeals before we can formally negotiate the division's first contract. The NLRB has certified our local as the exclusive representative, but VIA is appealing that decision too. ATU International has contacted them twice to begin negotiating their first contract, but they have not responded.

Eventually, ATU International Vice President, Stanley Smalls, emailed President Reid that:
We are pleased to announce that ATU is moving forward with negotiations with VIA/Hire Art. Your employer has informed ATU that they will adhere to the latest NLRB ruling, which certified your victory from August 24, 2022.

Via is still worried that other of their companies will vote to organize so they did not renewed their contract with HRT. June 30th 2024 is the last day for VIA, and on July 1st a company called Easton Coach will be the new contractor. Easton Coach recognizes the union and is prepared to take over the union contract that will be in place.

We recently held a ceremony at the Norfolk Union Hall were members from the new Para-transit division received their first contract booklets.

Micro transit is when companies try to use on-demand vehicles such as vans or cars to provide transit service. This takes work away from skilled CDL operators. ATU International says that Micro transit companies, like VIA, are a problem that unions should watch out for.
